I was waiting to watch this movie as I loved watching JVM several times for the magic created by KK and SK. If you have watched JVM already, its jus a translation of that, following each and every word. They didnt even wanted to take risk by changing the costumes. yeah, they do did some changes to suit the southies.....like including two small fight sequence, santhanam comedy track, a slight change in the climax.

I cannot say it is totally depressed me. I watched 'Aadhavan'on the first day and got irritated to the core. So this movie didnt create much of anger in me. They tried to do justification to the wonderful story.

What all missing from the original

Kareena's magic(though she would have done more on few scenes). You will feel the same energy, freshness when u come out of the movie. Tammanah's looks were good and same kind as of kareena...but her dialogue delivery is not as peppy as kareena's. When she misses the train for the second time, kareena will keep her polished nails on the cheeks and shouts 'Oh'...they shooted the same here too. Everything oooh.

Bharath can never be considered for the multi millionaire looks. Surya, siddarth would have been a better choice. I thought it would be more vague to see him. But he tried his utmost to do justice to the role. He did good.

Music, the foremost thing missed in the tamil version. The music by Pritam created waves among the youth. All the numbers were too good in hindi version, which we miss miserably here. Only the solo sad song was good.

My conclusion: If you have not seen 'Jab We Met' yet , you can have a good entertainer. But if you have, you will feel all these holes in 'Kandaen Kadhalai'

Kavithai Gundar album Release

The Tamil’s first hip hop music album "Kavithai Gundar" was launched on Saturday by singer cum actress Sruthi Hassan (Veteran actor Kamal Hassan’s Daughter….Needs no introduction though ;) ). This album was produced by AR Saravanan, who is the creative head and producer of Studio 8 Production. While Shruthi Hassan launched the album, the website of the company www.studioeight.in was launched by Hansaj Saxena, CEO of Sun TV.

The most awaited 54th Filmfare awards 2009 funtion was held on feb 28th at Yashraj Studios in suburban Mumbai. The hot and glamorous event was hosted by the new comers Ranbir Kapoor and Imran Khan. Hrithik Roshan(for Jodha Akbar) and Priyanka chopra(For Fashion) won the best actor and actress awards respectively. A small film like Mumbai Meri Jaan is judged the Best Film of the year 2008. He explained briefly on his statement after winning the second award "When I won the second Oscar, I wanted to give a bigger message. We have a choice for love and hate for everything whether religion, caste, language -- it is to choose love over hate whether in music or the philosophy of life."

Just now we got our new flat and it looks like one empty file now. I am determined that I should get inside only after filling my new home with sophisticated furniture. Lawyers vs Police @ Chennai High Court

It was very recent that the attack at the Chennai law college happened and now its at the court itself. Previously it was To-be-Lawyers ransacked the Law college, followed by the real time lawyers ransacking the High Court. The problem started with Janata Party leader, Subramaniya Swamy landed at the High Court for a case and had a dispute with the lawyers and ended up with a statement showcasing the caste name of a Dalit lawyer. This become a valid reason for our lawyers to throw a rotten egg over his face. Nextly those lawyers were been arrested, but the fellow lawyers opposed the same. There started the riot. Policemen went to control the lawyers and the clash started between them. The lawyers set fire to the police station inside the High court complex. Then the police started lathi charge over the lawyers, damaging their two wheelers(nearly 100). Justice Arumuga Perumal Adityan who advanced towards the police cordon waving his hands, was lathicharged and suffered an injury on his head.

Policemen damaged windshields of vehicles and overturned bikes. They also barged into court halls, offices of government lawyers, mediation centres, libraries and a dispensary on the campus and damaged properties. Refusing to give in, lawyers too resorted to stoning the police. All these things I dont know whether these are going to be taken as films or all these are copied from Films. But I am damn sure that there is no such film portraying such violence, as in real life situations like this. Bharat Mata Ki Jai!!

My London Trip

Its my first onsite trip and how would I miss to see those vibrant colors of the city, London. We planned it on a weekend and its all done. Firstly we started off to the Tower of London. I really admired the history behind it, the crowns and the ornaments of those days. The collection of Armories they place over there could be found nowhere in this earth. I felt like walking in heaven when I was walking over the Tower Bridge. I felt like singing "London Bridge is falling down...falling down" hahaha. From there we got into the car we hired and started towards the Buckingham Palace. There are few eco care hire available, which is fuel economic and emits very less CO2. It was so comfortable and enjoying the drive in the car. In the Buckingham palace we couldn’t see the "Guard Mounting" a beautiful ceremony which occurs on alternate days. From there we boarded to the famous Madame Tassaud's Wax Museum. No one will miss to see this museum at any cast as this contains so many Wax statues, which appear so real. We took nice snaps with all the celebrities oops…celebrity statues over there.

We thought of covering more, but we couldn’t as the time flew away admiring these statues. The travel was pleasurable and it was made easy, with the car rental available. In Europe car hire , is always been very easy for first time travelers like me and their service is extraordinary. There were no hidden costs and all their documents were on place. We went to all places at a very low cost. Hope you too enjoyed the trip with me and plan a trip with your family soon after reading this.

Naan Kadavul - Initial Review

The long wait is over and the movie Naan Kadavul, the début film from Bala was released last Friday. With not much expectation I went to the movie and was really satisfied. It was totally a different film when compared to his previous projects. I thought it would have been film, portraying all the religious humour occurring in the land of Kasi. But only the first 15 minutes of the movie was shot at Kasi, rest of the film was done completely in the south Tamilnadu.
The Story started with the search of a father for his son(Aarya), whom he left 14years back at kasi. He left him there as suggested by a astrologist. He finds him with a help of a priest. But his son was totally changed as a Kalabairava, God who decides one's fate. In that group they have the power to differentiate good and evil in the people. Aarya was got back to Tamilnadu. There was a group which indulges handicapped into begging. Pooja was caught into that group and was later sold to a guy. When this guy searches for pooja, she goes to Arya to help her. He helps her and gives her destiny. Also punishes the evil minded people, saying that he is the god to decide the fate. The movie ends with a message saying no god is taking care of any handicapped, so someone like kalabairav should come and decide their destiny. Aarya and pooja had did justice to their roles and the comedy in the movie is also very realistic.

Happy New Year - Trip Details

This is my first post on this new year and I wanted to post on what I was doing on New Year day. On the new year day, we have been roaming around temples in and around Thanjavur. It was a divine experience for me and I thought of sharing it with everyone.

Here are my Trip Details:

On 31st Dec 2008 we got the Rockfort express to Thanjavur, the land of temples.

After Breakfast we started in a tempo traveller to Thittai, a small village where we have a temple for Lord Guru. This is a special temple for Guru which is called a Guru Sthalam.

Next we visited a very ancient temple called Palaivana Nathar. Here the saint Gnanasambadhar have sung a poetry for this temple. In general we call these kinda temples as "Padal Petra Thalam" which means a temple which has a poetry on itself sung by any of the Four renowned saints of the Saiva religion who belong to the 7th to 9th century. They are Appar, Sundarar, Sambandar and Manikkavasagar.

After that we went to Thirunageswaram, I think many of you would be aware of this temple. Those who have to any pooja for Raagu will be surely visiting this temple for sure. I am visiting this for the first time and I really the admired to see such big temple.

Then we went to Thirukadaiyur, as a regular visit. A small story behind this. Once upon a time, there lived a Maharishi Mirigandu. Maharshi Mirigandu and his wife Maruthuvathi were very upset as they did not have a child.

The Lord, in recognition of the penance of the Rishi granted the Child boon. He asked the sage whether he wanted a child full of wisdom, austere character with a short life of 16 years or one with a long life but with no wisdom.

The sage preferred the former. The boy was born and named Markandeya. When he was 16 he learnt about the boon and began to visit the Siva temples and finally came to Thirukadayur. It was the 100th Siva temple he was visiting. That was his last day.

He saw Yama (Kalan, Lord of Dearth) coming to take his life. Markandeya embraced the Shivalinga (The God’s Idol in the temple). When Yama spread his death rope, it also covered the shivalinga. Angered by Yama’s act, Lord Siva kicked him , held him under his foot , making him inactive. With Yama being rendered inactive, no death occurred on earth increasing the burden of Mother earth. Mother earth rushed to Lord Siva and requested him to forgive Yama’s act and release him. At her request, the Lord restored Yama back to life.

Also it is believed that Lord Siva blessed Markendeya with the boon of being ever 16. ( How nice right!!). Since Markendeya had lost his parents and was all alone, he decided to share this boon with the other people on earth. He recited 16 slogas and it is believed that any body who recites these slogas with full devotion will live longer.

The reason why people celebrate Sasthiaptha Purthi in Thirukadayur – As Death was conquered at Thirukadaiyur, the Lord in Thirukadaiyur had been named as ‘Kala Samhara Moorthi ‘ ( Kala – Death, Samhara – Conquering, Moorthi – Lord)/ Mritunga jaya murthy (Mritya – Death, Jayam – Victory). It is believed that by praying Kala Samhara Moorthi one can conquer death.

So its very special to visit this ‘Kala Samhara Moorthi ‘ for getting a long life. There ends the story of my new year day.

I was born and brought up in a small village and whenever I get a chance to visit chennai, I used fancy the posh look that covers the metro. My maami used to take me to Tnagar on each visit, for some or the other purchase. I will always enjoy watching all those shops there. It will always been a busy place at anytime, anyday..

T Nagar - a place where you can buy things starting from 1 rupee to crores, starting from tooth picker to diamond jewellery. You can see all sorts of people here from beggars to celebrities. It will be a total fun filled entertainment to shop here, if at all you are a shopping freak. If not you will end up finding you in a messy place full of crowd, unable to proceed further.

After we switched to chennai, it has become regular routine for me visit this place often. I have shopped here even in odd hours, when all the shops are almost closed. You can buy a dressmaterial, give it for stitching, meanwhile shop around nad get back the stitched dress on your way back home. It will be wonderful. You will find it difficult to place step in the crowd during festive season. Your weight will surely be reduced during these times.

To browse around here are few landmarks in T Nagar.

Clothing:

You find a hell of lot of petty shops who sell equivalent to a brandstore. I have shopped in Bangalore, Cochin and Trivandrum. But nowhere you can find a worth investing material. The same material which costs 500 here will be sold at a rate of 1500 at the other places like bangalore. I am exaggerating, but thats the fact.

Pothys, Chennai Silks, RMKV, Nalli, Kumaran Stores, Kalanjiyam...these are few places where in you can check in for better clothes.

Jewellery:

We have as many jewellers also here. I am listing you a few. GRT, Joy Alukkas, Lalitha Jewellery LKS, Khazana, Prince Jewellery, Jewellery Mahal, OKJ, KFG, Tanishq.

Fashion Jewellery:

Near by to this place is Pondy Bazaar. Here you can find all sorts of fashion jewellery on the platform shops. Its all worth invest kinda pieces. But you must have hell a lot energy, patience and bargaining skills, to get the best one. You can find the same in Ranganathan street also, but I personally prefer Pondy Bazaar Street wala.

My Favourite Temples in Tamilnadu

Here are some of the must see temples in Tamilnadu which I have visited or I do visit, often.

1. Meenakshi Amman Temple, Madurai
This everyone would have heard of it, as it was nominated for the new seven wonders of the world. This is a very big temple with four very big gopurams in all four different directions. This is the landmark for the city Madurai. I used visit this every weekend when I did my schooling. The most attractive part as far me concerned is the Vibuthi Vinayagar at the entrance. I believe a lot in that GOD.

2. Malaikottai Vinayagar Temple, Thiruchirapalli
This is more special temple, which I visit for the sake of marks. After each semester exam got over, I have never failed to visit this temple, before going home for semester holidays. One should never miss to see this Vinayagar, with all "Alangaram" (Makeup). There is a saying in tamil called "Kaana kan kodi vendum" which means "You should have a crore eyes to admire this". Here it fits well to the context.

3. Big Temple, Thanjavur
This one is so close to my heart, as it is build by my evergreen hero "Raja Raja Chola I". Whenever I step into this temple, even today, I am awestruck by its magnificiant appearance. It appears to be a portrait for Stupendous Victory. As you enter the temple you will find a very big 'Nandhi' (PA for lord Shiva), which you can never find in any other place, of this size. I used to go to this temple early in the morning at 4.30 or very late in night, at the time of closing the temple. I used to accompany my cousin Nallasivam, who has a thunderous voice, with which he sings all devotional songs of lord Shiva. It will be so divine to go with him and enjoy the peacefulness and harmony around.

I should really tell about Ponniyin Selvan, a great novel by Late Kalki R Krishnamoorthy. It portrays the life of Raja Raja I. He is the one who established the Chola empire very vast in India. This novel has a lot of twists and turns in politics which happened around in that period, which is not less than what is happening around now.

4. Thirukadaiyur Abirami Temple
This temple I have visited only a few times. I love this temple because of its history. This was told as a bedtime story in my childhood by my maternal grandma. I used search for the evidences for that story in this temple, even now when I go there. I couldn't stop inspecting that. The speciality of this temple is the Soul and Divinity that appears in the Abirami statue, that will make one to feel the presence of Almighty.

5. Kapaleeshwara Temple, Chennai
This has become the favourite in recent times of mine. I have visited this with my husband alone, till now. Hence it is becoming so close to my heart nowadays. My husband loves this temple a lot and hence I do. But still the temple is maintained so clean and the Amman here is so divine.

This was comically followed with another statement, which he issues after tendering his resignation. He said "I pondered over the issue the whole night yesterday. I have submitted my resignation letter to chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh. I have gone by my conscience and decided to take this step." These people have dead conscience. When people shout from outside, they think its their conscience that is speaking.

5. Not far behind is Hindutva flag bearer Mr. LK Advani. When asked why did he not accompany Prime Minister Manmohan Singh to Mumbai as planned and said by him in the morning, he said, "he (PM) was getting late and it seemed that he would come only tomorrow. I have my election programmes planned for tomorrow and hence had to rush because I wanted to take a feel of the situation here."

6. Raj Thackrey was no where to be seen in this whole episode. I am still so surprised that Mahrashtra Navnirman Sena did not stop NSG commandos from entering Maharashtra, or even Mumbai. Very astonishing.

8. Yesterday an sms that I received said: "Let us pray that Chidambaram succeeds in bringing down terrorism the way he has brought down share prices."

It's a shame that Indian politics has fallen to its Nadir. A friend of mine just said that real character of an individual comes forth through how he/she behaves in a difficult time. It's a shame that these filthy politicians have started giving foolish statements.

My Son Turns ONE

Day after tomorrow, my sweet little angel turns ONE. He is the one who made our life so busy, engaged always, happy and so responsible too. As a gift of our love marriage, God has sent us a guardian angel, who takes care of both of our families too. He was born after the great loss of our Grandpa, who is the backbone for all our families. Hence my kid is believed as our grandpa returned home to bring back his loss.

He is the first grandchild of both our parents, hence he is the apple of everyone's eye. He is the best entertainer for my sister and brother in laws, and they are the ones who can get him anything in this world. In this 25 years, I can surely say the most unforgettable and treasured moment in my life would be, the time when I saw my kid for the first time, after the painful surgery to give birth. Obviously it would be the treasured moment for every Mom. The only thing which flashed my mind at that moment was, "GOD is always so generous over me".

We have been enjoying all his milestones, when he turned around, when he crawled, his toddling, his magnificiant walk, his first tooth, his first word...oooh everything. Its all remained a celebration for us. I felt so proud of myself when called me 'Amma', even I was so jealous over my Mama and dad, as his word was 'Thatha'. He is so gifted that his grandparents are becoming young and playing with him like kids, even when they are gasping for breath. He is pricelss for my Sister, on the otherside my brother inlwas will roam around the world to make him happy.

I wish everyone of your blessing will be there for him always. I have no powers to predict the future but I am sure that we have a bunch of happy days ahead with our Adhityan...

LEELAI - A Software Romance @ HCL Technologies

Leelai - A trendy movie being shot almost in a software company, HCL Technologies, Chennai.
The director, Andrew Louis is not so novice, but served as an assitant to the well known director cum actor S J Suryah. The team S J Suryah and A R Rahman worked out well in many films. Yet another combination blooming, the assitant of S J Suryah and Assitant of A R Rahman are teaming up in this venture.
The film being produced by Aascar Films V Ravichandran. The main story is about the romance that blossoms between two software engineers working at HCL. It will sure to turn out to be a high tech love story.

The main lead roles are been played by Shiv Pandit and Mansi. Shiv Pandit is already a well known as IPL compere and Mansi though HDFC and Sony Ericcson brand model.

“The entire movie was shot in popular software company HCL. Even the employees of the company were prevented from carrying cameras and mobile phones to their company. But we managed to get the permission of senior officials from the company and shot the movie for over 100 days inside the company,” preens the director.

Lollu Sabha fame Santhanam plays the comedy part to provide the humour quotient for the movie. Editing is by V T Vijayan, art by Edward and lyrics by Vaali.

Varanam Aayiram Movie Review

After a greatest delay, finally the movie has hit the silver screen, creating a lot of hype among the audience. Thats why the tickets for the entire weekend was sold out once it is released. But I am not sure of the box office status on the forthcoming days. Ok lets look into the story line.

The movie opens with death of an old man(Surya) at his residence. This news has been passed on to an army officer(surya2) who is on his way to a mission. His flashback on his life, from childhood till date, with his most adored and disciplinarian father. After schooling, the son surya enters into his college life at tiruchi, but ends up watching movies than attending classes. After his last semester exams, on the way back to Chennai he meets the beautiful Meghana (Sameera Reddy) on train and it is love at first sight. Being a guy who has never looked at a girl, he pulls out his guitar and sings En iniyia pon nilaave!

He comes back to his home and settle the debts of his dad and excels in his new business. Meanwhile Meghna gone to do her MS at Berkley University, California. With his parents permission, goes to America and win over his lady love. But by the plot of fate, Meghna dies in a bomb blast. Returning home india, surya suffers for this loss and indulges into drugs. To bring him back, the dad surya and mom simran tries all possible ways, and sends him kashmir to change his mindset. There he meets his co passenger menon in trouble(his son being kidnapped). Surya saves the life of Aditya, son of menon. This flashes his mind to persue a career in Army. And becomes an army officer immediately. Here suddenly Divya enters the plot, carrying her total love towards surya. Her love will soon be accepted and ends up in a successful marriage and kid too.

Gautham simply wrings you dry with his overplay of emotions in the father-son bonding. The climax is heart wrenching and heartwarming as Surya’s breakdown and tears roll down his cheek which looks real. The best part of the film is the first half, especially the wispy romance between Surya and Sameera Reddy, with the scene where Surya falls for her in the train is

hilarious and romantic. And when Sameera says finally – “I’m in love”, with Surya playing around with a toy helicopter at Fort Point, which offers the best view of the Golden Bridge in San Francisco, the romance tugs at your heart. Only Gautham, a romantic can make such scenes work.

Ratnavel’s camera is eye-catching as it pans California, Dehradun, Delhi, Rameswaram and other locations and gives the film richness. Surya’s make-up, his six pack look and old man get-up is very good.

The music of Harris Jayaraj is first rate and tangy, with meaningful lyrics of Thamarai. This is Harris- Gautham’s last film together and the combo is simply terrific. Four of the songs before interval are shot beautifully like a music video, with Adiye Kolluthe… and Nenjukkul Peidhidum.. being the pick of lot, while two songs post interval mars the tempo.

The power-packed performer award belongs to Surya, who is outstanding in a dual role as father and son. Shorn off any artifice, his anguish, pains and joy look real. The female star cast is simply too good, whether it is Simran playing Surya’s mother, Sameera Reddy pure eye candy and brings an uninhibited joie to her role as Meghana. Divya is outstanding, investing her character with sensitivity a far cry from her Kuthu days.

On the downside, the film is excruciatingly slow, and in the second half plods as the director has no story to say. All of a sudden why did he make his hero larger than life? The Delhi kidnapping and the hero solving it has been done to bring out his heroism, which sticks out like a sore thumb. Is there not a cut-off age to join the army? Surya’s character is far too simplistic. The thing about a father backing his son to go to America and win over his lady love just doesn’t wash. An ordinary middle class, Tamil family speaking so fluently in English does not gel with viewers.

On the whole its a modernised version of cheran's "Thavamai thavamirundhu" in which Rajkiran is a poor village father, whereas here Surya(Dad) is a father of modern times working in central govt. But the former had so many realisitic feelings clustered together, but the latter ends up in a messy mixed over reactions.

Citigroup Cuts down 52,000 of its workforce

Citigroup Inc revealed plans to cut 52,000 jobs by early next year in a dramatic move to restore the No. 2 US bank to health as it combats mounting debt losses and sagging economies worldwide.

The cuts announced by Chief Executive Vikram Pandit on Monday affect 15 per cent of Citigroup's workforce, and are in addition to 23,000 jobs eliminated between January and September.
Citigroup plans to slash expenses by as much as 20 per cent, and spend a total of $50 billion to $52 billion in 2009. That compares with $61.9 billion over the last four quarters.

The cuts will be global, affecting many regions and business lines, including the retail and investment banks, a person close to the matter said. About one-half will come from layoffs and attrition, and the rest from the sale of units, such as the German retail banking business.

Pandit became Citigroup's chief executive last December, and has faced much criticism from investors and others for failing to implement a workable turnaround plan. The New York-based bank has lost $20.3 billion in the last year, and some analysts do not expect it to make money before 2010.

"As the economy continues to weaken they will have greater credit losses," said Michael Holland, founder of money manager Holland & Co in New York. "Cuts will lessen the losses, but they in no way guarantee profitability."

Pandit told employees in a memo that Citigroup has spent the last year "getting fit," and projects a "difficult" 2009 for clients and customers.

Citigroup's latest cuts are the most by any US company since the global credit crisis began last year. They are also the second most ever, trailing the 60,000 that International Business Machines Corp IBM announced in 1993, according to outplacement firm Challenger, Gray & Christmas Inc.

The latest cuts would leave Citigroup with about 300,000 employees, down 20 per cent from the end of 2007 and about the same number it had at the end of 2005. People at the bank said the cuts should be made by the first couple of months of 2009.

STOCK UNDER PRESSURE

Shares of Citigroup, a component of the Dow Jones industrial average, fell 19 cents, or 2 per cent, to $9.33 in afternoon trading on the New York Stock Exchange.Last week, Citigroup stock fell into the single digits for the first time since Sanford "Sandy" Weill created the bank in 1998 from the merger of Travelers Group Inc and Citicorp.

Well over 100,000 jobs have been lost at the world's largest banks and brokerages since the global credit crisis began. In the last month, Goldman Sachs Group Inc began cutting 3,200 jobs, and Morgan Stanley said it will cut 10 per cent of jobs in the unit housing its investment bank.

Citigroup said it has a "very strong" capital position, and according to the person close to the matter has no need to further cut its dividend, which has already been reduced twice this year.

Still, many investors remain wary. Through Friday, the bank's stock was down 68 per cent this year, leaving Citigroup with a market value of $51.9 billion.That's barely twice the $25 billion of capital it received from the US Treasury Department's bank bailout plan, and down from more than $270 billion in late 2006.

"We have a bull market in fear," said Henry Asher, president of Northstar Group Inc in New York.

Citigroup also said its board will make decisions on executive compensation after Dec. 31.

That prompted criticism from New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, who urged the bank to follow Goldman's decision on Sunday not to pay bonuses to top executives this year.

"It seems only fair that top executives should shoulder their fair share of these difficult economic times," Cuomo said. "It would send exactly the wrong message for Citigroup's top brass to collect bonuses while investors, taxpayers and now Citigroup's own employees suffer."

DIVERSIFICATION DOESN'T HELP

Citigroup was built principally by Weill, who ceded control to Pandit's predecessor, Charles Prince, in 2003. Analysts have said Citigroup never invested enough in technology or to make the bank's various parts work well together.

Its geographic diversity, including operations in more than 100 countries, is now also working against it as customers in such countries as Brazil, India and Mexico find it harder to stay current on payments.
At the same time, Citigroup's ability to grow at home is relatively limited. Last month, Wells Fargo & Co derailed Citigroup's attempt to buy Wachovia Corp and its $418.8 billion in deposits.

The bank has tried to downplay reports of dissension among directors regarding the performance of Pandit and the bank's chairman, Sir Win Bischoff. Last week, lead director Richard Parsons said the board supported management's plans.

LATELY, I have been thinking a lot about the Lehman crisis. Spending money that they didn’t have and going beyond their means is one of the main reasons for their situation today. In fact that is the cause for the current economic crisis in the US.

When I see all this happening, I can only remember the good old days. Then, karz was bad. People looked down upon those who took loans. Parents would not give their daughter’s hand in marriage to a man with loans. But of course, the times have changed now. Everyone I know has a loan. The buzz word is EMI (Equated Monthly Installment). Today you can buy everything on EMI – a house, a television, an i-Pod. In fact I know of someone who just bought a fancy BMW 3 series on EMI, instead of buying a cheaper car outright with cash. I mostly prefer to take the public transport, but then I am an old man with old thoughts!

Anyway, coming back to what caused the crisis. Imagine having Rs 2 lakh in your bank account, no regular income, yet buying a house worth 65 lakh, in the hope of seeling it for a higher price. Even if the price of the house fell by just 5 per cent (that is Rs 3 lakh), you will go bankrupt. This is what Lehman Brothers did; with around USD 20 billion they went and bought assets worth over USD 600 billion. Isn’t it suicidal and simply foolish?

I am sure things would have been different, had I been the head of Lehman Brothers. But who wants an old conservative man like me to head a complex financial institution.

But there are a few lessons that we can learn:

1. Live a balanced life and avoid overspending.

2. Don’t buy things we don’t need.

3. Don’t buy Branded good’s.

4. Don’t buy excess Food, Clothes, Cosmetics, Footwear, Electronics and Fashion accuracies, just think before you buy.

Tip: World still has a lot of growth ahead and the future holds immense opportunities for us. Let’s make the most of it and save and invest it wisely instead of wasting our precious little on things we don’t need.

5. Try to balance life with work (No one is happy to work in their professions).

6. Don’t stress out yourself, after work try to do some extra activities like swimming, yoga, walking, running where you can divert your mind from stress.
A Thumb Rule: Health is more important than money.

7. Try to understand each other (Wife and Husband) in financial matters and help each other.

Tip: As soon as you get your monthly salary, set aside a fixed amount, usually 35 percent, for insurance, savings and investments. You can then spend the rest.

8. Not all the loans are bad. Loans that are ‘need based’ (home loans, education loans) can always find a place in your finances against those that are largely ‘want based’ (Credit cards, Personal loans, Car loans).

9. Borrow only if repayment is financially comfortable.

This year, on his birthday, Gandhiji would have felt happy for viewing a "Smokers-free" public places in India. After 61 years of freedom we have proved that nothing is an unachievable dream for an Indian.

Hats off to Dr Anbumani Ramadoss for achieving such a valuable supreme court order, which can save millions of lives from cancer.Some call him a passionate activist, crusading against health hazards, while others allege he is publicity hungry and wastes time on trivial matters. He has been a threat to the film actors, desist from showing smoking & drinking scenes from movies.

Research has generated evidence that secondhand smoke causes the same problems as direct smoking, including lung cancer, cardiovascular disease and lung ailments such as emphysema, bronchitis and asthma.Specifically, meta-analyses show that lifelong non-smokers with partners who smoke in the home have a 20–30% greater risk of lung cancer than non-smokers who live with non-smokers. Non-smokers exposed to cigarette smoke in the workplace have an increased lung cancer risk of 16–19%.

M.K. Thyagaraja Bagavadhar (1909-1959):

He was a popular actor and singer in the 1930s and 1940s. He was born at Mayiladuthurai. He is considered as the first superstar of Tamil Cinema His first movie was "Pavalakodi" in 1934 and he appeared in another 14 movies until his death. Most of his movies were record breakers. Haridass, released in 1944, ran continuously for three years in Chennai Broadway theatre.He was charged with murder in 1944 but was acquitted and released in 1946. Prior to the arrest he was booked to make 12 movies, but he lost interest and the few movies he did make were unsuccessful. Nevertheless he still drew huge crowds in concerts. He quietly spent his last years, having lost almost all his wealth defending his case.

M.S.Viswanathan & Ramamurthy :

M.S.Viswanathan-Ramamurthy duo dominated the South Indian Film Music especially Tamil
Film Music during mid 50s and 60s. They were responsible for introducing a change in the
orchestration of the songs in Tamil films. They made good use of the guitar and the drums,
and added the touch of Western music into Tamil film songs, which until that time were
pretty much classical oriented. The combination of M.S.Viswanathan and T.K.Ramamurthy
(as the Music Directors), Kannadasan (as the lyricist), T.M.Soundarajan (as the male
singer) and P.Susheela (as the female singer), produced 100s of excellent songs in the
50's and the 60's. Later day Tamil film music directors like V.Kumar, the duo of Shankar-
Ganesh, and some others, started their careers under the wings of M.S. Viswanathan and
and T.K.Ramamurthi. They scored music for a couple of Hindi films but with a lesser
level of success.The duo split sometime in the mid-sixties (1965/1966), after which MSV
continued to score music for Tamil films with great success, almost into the mid-
seventies, before Ilaiyaraja came into the field, and established his own unique style
with greater success, while Ramamurthi did not meet with as much of a success in his solo
ventures.

Ilayaraja:

Ilayaraja was born on 2nd June 1943 in Pannaipuram, a little hamlet Pannaipuram ,near Madurai,Tamil Nadu . Ilayaraja entered the tamil film industry and composed his first tamil music in 1976 for the movie 'Annakili". The score for this film was a runaway success. It took the audience by surprise as it was totally a different kind of music than the other leading music directors at that time.Most of his movies were a instant hit at the stake of the music alone. Directors used his name to make profit.With his arrival on the scene, for the first time in India, we got a complete music director who does every
thing-composing, orchestration, arrangement of instruments and writing notations.Since then he holds a record of composing songs for more than 750 feature films which include composing songs and also the background track for each one of these movies in Tamil,
Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, Hindi and English.And even today there is no one like him who can carry an entire film on the strength of his background music alone - the success of at least 100 movies in India have been solely due to his background score. Innovations in chords, progression of chords, strings, percussion, points & counterpoints, harmony, melody, polyphony, bass in the foreground, waltz like movements, baroque style & symphonic interludes- there is nothing this man has not interpreted in his own inimitable grandiose style.

In July 1993 recorded his first major work in western classical music, his Symphony No.1
with the world famous Royal philharmonic Orchestra of London under the baton of John
Scott. Ilaiyaraaja is the first Asian whose symphony was performed by the prestigious RPO
(Royal Philharmonic Orchestra) whose patron is Her Majesty The Queen Elizabeth and the
president is Lord Yehudi Menuhin.

He is also the first Indian who has written a western classical symphony. Composing a
symphony is the ultimate in composing music in the western classical tradition. That is on
the lines of such great composers like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Brahms, who had given us
so much of great music. The time taken to complete a symphony to be played by a full scale
symphony orchestra varies from composer to composer; depending upon his mood, the
complexity of music, etc. If Mozart took a few days to complete a symphony, Brahms took
fourteen years to complete one of his symphonies. And Ilaiyaraaja well known for his speed
of composing completed this symphony in just one month's time.

Best Music Director many times from the governments of Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh.
He was conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Letters by... Annamalai University of Chidambaram,India in April 1994. The World University of Arizona, USA in June 1994. Madurai Kamaraj University in 1996.

A R Rahman:

A. R. Rahman was born as 'A S Dileep Kumar' to R. K. Shekhar and Kasthuri in Chennai.At
the age of 11, he joined, as a keyboardist, the troupe of Maestro Ilayaraja.In 1992, the
first time he got chance to enter in film field, through a Malayalam film named Yodha.And
with this good entry he was approached by film director Mani Ratnam to compose the score
and soundtrack for manirathnam Tamil film Roja. Roja's score met with high sales and
acclaim, in its original and dubbed versions, bringing about an effective transformation in film music at the time, and Rahman followed this with scores for films including, among others, Bombay, Kadhalan, Indira, Minsaara Kanavu, Muthu and Love Birds, which gained him notice. His soundtracks gained him recognition in the Tamil film industry and across the country for his versatality in classical, Folk, jazz, reggae, soft rock and other styles in his pieces. Rangeela, directed by Ram Gopal Varma, marked Rahman's debut in Hindi films. Many popular and superhit scores for films including Dil Se and Taal followed. The sales of these albums prompted several film producers to take film music more seriously.He is a recipient of the Padma Shri award from the Government of India. Rahman has been involved in several projects aside from film. He made an album Vande Mataram (1997) on
India's 50th anniversary of independence to immense success. As of 3 October 2008, the
song Maa Tujhe Salaam from this album is the 14th most viewed all time music video[7] on
Youtube. He followed it up with an album called Jana gana mana, a conglomeration of
performances by many leading exponents/artists of Indian classical music.Rahman's instant
success is owed to his clever usage of Western instruments to invoke Indian sounds while
his peers tried to invoke Western sounds through Indian instruments.

Harris Jayaraj:

Harris Jayaraj entered the world of film music as a musician, programming scores and drum–percussion for many films under the famous Indian Music Director A R Rahman. He started his career by composing beats for TV advertisements. His first music score for a commercial movie was for the Tamil film Majunu.But Minnalae was reached the audience better than his first movie. The music was well received, especially the song "Vaseegara", made the film becoming a big box office hit, running the charts for weeks. After Minnale, Harris composed music for the Tamil movies 12B and Kovil which were once again a huge musical super hit. His first music score in Bollywood was for Rehna Hai Terre Dil Mein, a remake of Minnale', which was again a hit. His recent release Dhamdhoom has fetched accolades.

Yuvan Shankar Raja:

The first film he composed for was the Tamil film Aravindhan. He captivated the youth's attention by the refreshing Thulluvatho Ilamai album. Then there is no turn back for him. Hailing from a musical family, much of Yuvan’s inspiration is said to come from the several genres he grew up listening to such as Western classical music, pop, rock, heavy metal, jazz, urban Hip hop and other styles and sounds. His versatality is his big asset. He ranges from rustic Tamil folk to heavy metal. His father Ilaiyaraaja is also an inspiration. Yuvan Shankar Raja is renowned for his unique blend of melody and electronic orchestration. Soundtracks for films such as Kadhal Kondein, 7G Rainbow Colony, Kanda Naal Mudhal and others were released to acclaim and popularity. He is known for his ability to produce hit albums back to back in a very short period of time. When Yuvan started music career he was heavily compared to his elderly brother Karthik Raja and often criticized by music critics but later on gained momentum after the hit music for Poovelaam Ketupaar. His recent hits in combination with Venkat Prabhu, Chennai 28 and Saroja, proved him to be a maestro for the youth.

So I finally came up with the first post. All about Tamil film industry. Before reaching an era of releasing the movies on internet instead of theatres, lets have a look into the history of theatres in Tamilnadu and also about the origin of Tamil film industry…..here it goes…

M.Edwards screened the first ever movie show in South India at Victoria Public Hall, Chennai in 1897

Electric Theatre-the first ever cinema house in South India was built by Major Warwick on Anna Salai, Chennai in 1900

Lyric-the second cinema house in Chennai was started by Cohen at Anna Salai – 1902.

Edison's Cinematography-the first touring cinema in South India was formed by Swamikannu Vincent in 1905

Gaiety-the first Indian owned cinema house in South India was built by R.Venkiah.This still continues to screen movies in the same spot – 1914

Nataraja Mudaliyar

S.M.Dharmalingam Mudaliyar and Nataraja Mudaliyar started the first film producing concern in South India at Chennai.Nataraja Mudaliyar made Keechavathanam the first feature film to be made in South India in 1916.

Pre-censorship of films was introduced through the Indian Cinematography Act of 1918.

Exhibitor Film Services, the first distributing concern in South India was startedby A.Narayanan in the year 1927

In 1929, with the formation of General Pictures Corporation in Chennai, cinema emerges as an entertainment industry in South India.

T.P.Rajalakshmi Ammal

In 1931, Kalidas, the first Tami talkie was screened. It was directed by H.M.Reddy and T.P.Rajalakshmi played the lead role. So it Tamil movie industry placed its first step here.

Srinivasa Cinetone, the first sound studio in South India was started by A.Narayanan in the year 1934

K.B.Sundarambal

The birth of Stardom K.B.Sundarambal who received rupees one lakh as salary for playing the lead role in the film Nandanar (1935) .It was produced by Asandas Classical Talkies.

Cinema Ulagam,the first Tamil film journal was launched. It was edited and published by P.S.Chettiar in the year 1935

In the year 1936, the oldest studio in South India, Modern theatres was established at Salem.
Miss. Kamala, the first Tamil talkie to be directed by a woman named T.P.Rajalakshmi was released in the year 1936.

In 1937, Chinthamani, the first Tamil film to run for more than a year in a single cinema house was released.

The South India Film Chamber of Commerce started in Chennai in the year 1939, with S.Satyamurthi as the first president.

D.K.Pattamal,sang the first play back song for the long documentary Mahatma Gandhi by A.K.Chettiar – 1940

A.V.Meyyappa Chettiar

Harichandra(Tamil),was dubbed into Kannada by A.V.Meyyappa Chettiar thus becoming the first dubbed film in South India – 1943

The film Haridas played continuously for 110 weeks in Broadway talkies, Chennai – 1944

In 1951, K.B.Sundarmbal,the first film artiste (That too a women) to enter the legislature, is nominated to the Madras Legislative Council.

Andha Naal, the first Tamil film without any song was released in 1954

Tamizh Nadigar Sangam, an association of film artistes is founded by K.Subrahmanyam (1959).

M.G.Ramachandran

M.G.Ramachandran, film star wins an election from Parangimalai constituency in Chennai -1967.
Rajarajacholan for the cinemascope film in Tamil was released in 1973.

Annai Bhoomi, the first 3D movie, made in Tamil in 1985.

Maaveeran, with Superstar Rajinikanth in the lead role is the first 70mm film, made in Tamil in 1986.
